Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has stated that he has spent over a decade on the outskirts of Nigeria’s mainstream music scene, asserting that he has been effectively blacklisted due to his outspoken style.

In a recent episode of the Selah Meditate podcast, the son of Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti discussed how his music, which centers on social commentary, has historically faced resistance in Nigeria.

He noted that the legacy of his father and other socially aware musicians had made authorities cautious about the potential influence of music, leading to a preference for artists who do not engage in political discourse.

“The impact of Fela and his contemporaries who spoke truth to power scared the government. They made the government realize the power of artistry. So, the government invested more in artists who don’t make conscious music than in those who sing about realities.

“When I am in Nigeria, I don’t hesitate to express my thoughts. Many people believe I should be canceled. I have been canceled for about 13 years following my performance of conscious music at an event for former Lagos State Governor Ambode. Even before that, my music faced significant restrictions.

“I believe I am not truly canceled because I am doing well. Nigeria has canceled me a long time ago, but it represents only a small portion of my market. Therefore, being canceled doesn’t significantly affect me.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Seun Kuti maintained that the claimed blacklisting has had minimal impact on his overall career, highlighting that his audience extends well beyond Nigeria.

He noted that many artists are concerned about being marginalized locally, as the Nigerian market is often central to their fanbase, a pressure he does not experience to the same degree.

His comments have sparked renewed discussions on creative freedom, the politics of the industry, and the role of conscious music in the current Afrobeats landscape.
