Spyro Discusses Difficult Childhood Experiences Involving His Father, Who Is A Pastor

Nigerian singer Spyro has discussed challenging experiences from his childhood, highlighting how frequent accusations from his father had a lasting emotional effect on him.

In an interview with Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni, Spyro talked about growing up under the strict oversight of his father, who was a pastor.

Spyro mentioned that he was often blamed when money went missing in church, with his father accusing him of stealing in front of others. He described the public embarrassment as particularly hurtful, especially when the missing money was eventually found elsewhere.

“My dad is a pastor. He tells others that this boy is a thief. Whenever money goes missing in church, he points to me. The public embarrassment was substantial, and then when he eventually finds what he’s looking for, he buys milk for me.

When we got home, my dad punished me, leaving a mark on my back that I still have 22 years later. It was upsetting because I had told him the truth and suffered for it.

Without the love from my mom and her ability to balance things out, it really affected me. I felt that since he believed I was a terrible child, I might as well act like one,” he reflected.

Spyro also recounted an incident from his school days where a cleaner scratched his head with her long nails. After he reported it to his father, he claimed he was accused of lying and was punished instead.

He noted that experiences like these gradually shaped his self-perception. Being treated as though he was a “terrible child” led him to consider accepting the negative label imposed on him.

Despite the painful memories, Spyro recognized his mother’s crucial role in supporting him through his childhood. He credited her love and support for providing the necessary balance during those tough times.
