Mr. P Reveals How He Created Hit Single, ‘I Can’t Look Away’

Nigerian singer Mr. P has discussed the creative process behind his trending single, “I Can’t Look Away,” noting that he intentionally revisited the approach that contributed to P-Square’s success as one of Africa’s leading music groups.

In a radio interview with broadcaster Steve Onu, also known as Yaw, he talked about the inspiration behind the song’s popularity and the steps taken to reconnect with a sound that resonates with long-time fans.

Mr. P mentioned that a key decision was to bring back members of the creative team who were pivotal during the P-Square era. He explained that reuniting with familiar collaborators helped recreate the chemistry that led to many of the group’s biggest hits.

He stated,

“I had to bring back everybody that worked with us as P-Square, like Foster Zeeno, who was the brains behind many of our hits as P-Square.”

His aim was to produce a high-quality record that can connect with a diverse audience while retaining the essence of the sound that fans have come to appreciate over the years.

Additionally, he revealed that he has secured a significant five-year partnership with an international company, which reportedly includes the release of three albums. With substantial investment already committed to the project, he recognizes the importance of delivering music that meets expectations.

“These people have invested so much in me, so I need to deliver,”

he remarked.

Since its release, “I Can’t Look Away” has gained traction, receiving praise from listeners who feel the song captures elements of the signature style that characterized P-Square’s influence across Africa and beyond.

The track has also garnered attention from other music stars, including Davido, who endorsed the song on X, describing it as a “fire banger.”

As the song continues to receive positive reception, many fans view it as a testament to Mr. P’s enduring ability to create engaging, relatable music while drawing on the rich musical legacy that established P-Square as one of the continent’s most influential acts.
