Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, known professionally as Mr May D, is currently popular on social media due to a heated argument that began following his recent performance at a function in Lagos.

Small Doctor, a street-pop act, was joined by May D at the Huspuppi Cup opening ceremony, which took place in the Oworoshoki area of Lagos. Clips of May D performing in front of a street crowd spread rapidly online, eliciting mixed responses.

A close associate of Wizkid, Tufab, further escalated the drama with a sarcastic tweet that stated: “May D is performing at the 02 Arena.” The post was subsequently removed, but it had already provoked a negative reaction. Though the post was later deleted, it had already stirred backlash.

DJ Neptune came to May D’s defence, criticising Tufab for belittling an artist who earns a living through his craft. Your fellow man is working hard and legally earning his daily living with his God-given abilities, and this is what you have to say? Not all things should be for relaxation. It was red today; it won’t be green tomorrow. “He tweeted ‘SMH’.”

Rapper Skales chimed in, accusing Tufab of trolling artists on the internet. He portrayed him as an elderly man, likely nearly 40, who lacks a genuine occupation but instead devotes time to disparaging others, reminiscent of individuals in their early twenties.

The exchange continued, with Tufab responding to Skales, which only added to the online turmoil.

Mr May D has broken his silence on Instagram, defending his fans on Lagos streets. “He told those making fun of him that they should be quiet, because he is human as well.”

The incident has sparked differing opinions online, with some supporters commending May D for remaining humble and performing wherever he is asked, whereas others question whether the trolling went too far. Attendees at the Lagos event commended May D’s performance.
