Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, also known as Mr May D, has caused a stir online after delivering a stern warning to music enthusiasts comparing him to Afrobeats phenomenon Ayo Balogun, commonly referred to as Wizkid.

The Ile Ijo artist released a statement on X firmly asserting that his impact on the Nigerian music scene is unparalleled and unmatched by others.

I will never want to see myself compared to any other person in this field going forward. I’m a distinct species in my own right. The singer May D referred to GOD as his child. GOD’s baby,” May D wrote.

His remark sparked intense debates among both fans and detractors, with numerous individuals discussing his viewpoint on social media platforms. During the commotion, May D recalled an earlier incident in which Wizkid performed his song Too Fine, a collaboration with rapper Kel, when he was in attendance.

I recall attending a gathering where Wizkid was on stage performing a song that I had written with Kel Too Fine, and I was part of the audience watching. He still loves him up to this point, but says he never makes comparisons.

In 2011, May D gained popularity after he signed with Square Records, the former record label owned by the now-defunct music group P-Square. He left the label in August 2012, a decision that he thinks had a substantial effect on his career path.

Recent comments by him have also intensified discussions about his impact on the music industry and his standing among Afrobeats legends.
