Nigerian singer Liya has shared her reasons for leaving Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), citing a desire for personal and artistic growth as the primary motivation.

Liya, who became the label’s first female signee in October 2020, officially left the record company in 2023. In a revealing interview on Wahala with Josy Anne, she discussed the emotional challenges she faced during her time at the label, including experiences of depression and burnout.

“Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself—as a person and as an artist. It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision I had to make for my own well-being,” she stated.

She also touched on the criticism she received from the public, mentioning that many did not understand her situation and wrongly labeled her as lazy or unproductive.

“They called me names… people saying she’s lazy, she doesn’t know what she’s doing. They’re just pouring money on her, and she’s not doing anything,” Liya commented.

Additionally, she disclosed that these challenges impacted her social media activity, making it difficult for her to manage her Instagram account personally for over two years.

During that period, her manager took over posting on her behalf, a support she valued greatly.

“He was tired, but I’m so glad he understood. He never pushed me or forced me,” she noted, recognizing the patience and care that helped her through a tough time in her career.
