Highest Sales In The First Week For Hip-Hop Projects In 2026

Hip-hop has regained prominence in 2026. Late last year, Billboard reported a decline in hip-hop’s market share from 30 percent in 2020 to 24 percent in 2025, leading to discussions among fans and critics about whether the genre was losing its commercial appeal or undergoing a transformation.

The beginning of this year indicates that the genre is performing well. Albums from J. Cole, A$AP Rocky, and Don Toliver, among others, have achieved significant sales figures with their recent releases.

A$AP Rocky had a notable start in 2026. In January, the Harlem artist, returning after an eight-year hiatus, released his much-anticipated album, Don’t Be Dumb, which achieved his third No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart. The album sold 123,000 equivalent album units in its first week.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again released his 17th album, Slime Cry, on the same day as Rocky, achieving the highest sales of his career with 70,000 equivalent album units sold in its opening week.

At the end of January, Don Toliver released his project, Octane. This collection earned him his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, with an impressive 162,000 equivalent album units sold in its best first-week sales of his career.

J. Cole’s significant release, The Fall-Off, moved 280,000 equivalent album units in its first week.

In May, Drake achieved the highest album sales among rappers for the year. His ninth studio album, Iceman, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart after selling 463,000 equivalent album units in the week following its May 15 release. This figure represents the second-largest sales week of 2026 for any album and the largest for a hip-hop project.
