Don Jazzy, the founder of Mavin Records and Afrobeats legend, has unveiled his all-time favourite Afrobeats songs and albums, providing fans with a nostalgic glimpse into the sound that characterised a generation.

In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, a seasoned music producer discussed the music that influenced both his career and the development of Afrobeats from Lagos to an international audience. His choices embody the spirit of the genre’s most prestigious period, particularly the Mo’ Hits era he co-launched with D’Banj.

Don Jazzy’s top songs consist of timeless classics that redefined Nigerian pop music. 2Baba’s African Queen was portrayed as a cornerstone record that initially brought Afrobeats to a global audience, in contrast Wizkid’s Ojuelegba was praised for its powerful emotion and narrative that transcended Nigeria’s borders.

D’Banj’s Fall in Love, one of the largest records from the Mo’ Hits period, solidified his continental fame, according to him. 9ice’s Gongo Aso made the list due to its smooth combination of traditional Yoruba beat and urban pop, and Davido’s Aye stood out for its fusion of Highlife melodies and youthful charm.

When it came to albums, Don Jazzy specifically commended Wande Coal’s Mushin 2 Mo’Hits, which he proudly referred to as “produced by me.” The album, which was released in 2009, continues to be regarded as a pivotal work in Afropop and is frequently cited as one of the finest Nigerian albums ever produced.

He also cited Grass 2 Grace by 2Baba, Superstar by Wizkid, The Entertainer by D’Banj, and Aṣa by Aṣa as projects that moulded the contemporary sound of Afrobeats and motivated a new generation of artists.

Don Jazzy’s choices demonstrate the lasting impact of the early 2000s era and the musicians who established the groundwork for the current global Afrobeats movement.
