Following his extended period of inactivity on X after a recent intense outburst, Ye couldn’t resist commenting on Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX performance, which he “really loved.” On manager John Monopoly’s Instagram, the Chicago multihyphenate mentioned that it is his favourite Super Bowl halftime show, recalling Michael Jackson’s performance in 1993.

I vaguely recall Jackson’s halftime show. The artist behind “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” revealed that he has been viewing clips before shifting his attention to Lamar’s straightforward visual presentation. The flag was newly displayed. The manner in which they performed ‘HUMBLE.’ was very captivating, especially the way the artists’ heads were swaying. I was completely stunned. The man’s voice command capabilities and everything else.

It’s noteworthy that Ye selected Lamar’s performance as his standout, particularly given the array of impressive halftime displays over the past decade. Notably, Beyoncé performed on stage in 2013, with Dr. Dre, whose setlist also featured Lamar, taking the stage in 2021, and Usher in 2024 followed.

Most artists typically rely on decades of chart-topping hits for their high-profile performances, but Lamar’s Super Bowl appearance seemed more like an extension of his surprise sixth studio album, GNX. As a result, some of K Dot’s long-time fans were left disappointed, having possibly been expecting him to play hits from albums such as To Pimp A Butterfly, good kid, m.A.A.d city or even Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

Ye later clarified in the post that the controversy surrounding the release of “Not Like Us” was being fuelled. Lamar’s halftime performance was also filled with a lot of energy, which included the previously mentioned song “HUMBLE.” The songs “DNA,” along with popular GNX hits like the top-charting “squabble up”, “luther” featuring SZA, and “tv off”.

It has become a recurring pattern that Ye’s initial praise of Lamar’s performance rapidly transforms into something entirely different within a short timeframe. He then proceeded to spend the next minute drawing comparisons between Drake and R. Kelly partnered with him to promote his Yeezy line. The Donda artist noted that following an incredible Super Bowl performance by Kendrick, they were immediately criticized for it being the worst Super Bowl performance. “They exploit racial divisions among Black people, only to discard them once their objectives have been fulfilled.”
