Kendrick Lamar is set to headline the Super Bowl LIX halftime show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in just over a week, a performance that has received mixed reactions. According to Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, the artist behind the hit song “Alright” was seen as the ideal candidate for the task, despite having roots in Compton.

“Perez stated on Thursday, January 30, that he has had an incredibly impressive year, fully deserving of the attention he has received.” Lamar kicked off 2024 with a standout verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” From there, Drake collaborated with pgLang founder on one of the largest rap feuds in recent years, which is widely regarded as having been won by him, followed by the surprise release of his sixth studio album, GNX.

Perez further stated, “The Grammys also acknowledged that.” That’s a factor that needs to be taken into account. Lamar’s “Not Like Us” has received five nominations, encompassing Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song. He’s competing for a total of seven awards at the upcoming event, which is scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday, February 2.

Perez explained that while Lamar was chosen over other NOLA natives like Lil Wayne, it was due to Kendrick’s deep-rooted connection to New Orleans culture. She further clarified that the performer’s ability to connect with music culture should be taken into account, regardless of their age. It must pay homage to actual music, regardless of its genre. Kendrick achieves that.

Lil Wayne was indeed a part of the conversation, yet Perez ultimately stated that Kendrick was the ideal candidate for the show at this stage. The Pulitzer Prize winner is anticipated to feature SZA during the halftime performance on February 9, only two months prior to the duo embarking on their “Grand National Tour” across North America. Other notable guests have yet to be announced.
