Vince Staples – Blackberry Marmalade

Blackberry Marmalade Vince Staples

Vince Staples is set to release a new album soon, having just released the single “Blackberry Marmalade” along with its music video. Thematically, this track is one of his most somber and aggressive to date. The lyrics and visuals address issues such as state-sanctioned violence against Black individuals in the United States, the struggles faced by the Black community, and mass shootings. The video portrays a harrowing scene involving Vince and others experiencing a mass shooting from a first-person viewpoint, concluding with the shooter taking their own life. It ends with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be.”

Musically, “Blackberry Marmalade” marks a departure for Staples, featuring a punk-infused alternative rock instrumental that adds intensity to the track. The song is notable for various reasons, and anticipation is high for what Vince Staples will present next.
