During a sit-down interview with British Vogue on Tuesday, February 18, the “PUSH 2 START” singer explicitly stated that she is placing a focus on the entire Black versus. The argument behind her remained a colourful one.

Tyla explained to a publication that even with a compelling explanation, some individuals will continue to refuse to comprehend the information. At this stage, I’m confident in my self-awareness. As a Black person and a Coloured person, I’m aware I embody both identities.

Individuals who are genuinely interested in learning can now grasp the concept. For my part, that’s enough. It would be reasonable to assume that a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, would not have to constantly justify herself, particularly when her most vocal detractors are those who are initially resistant to understanding the relevant cultural background. We have arrived at this point.

The controversy surrounding Tyla’s identity gained momentum in 2023 following the resurfacing of an old TikTok post in which she identified herself as a “Coloured South African.” The Grammy Award winner’s choice of words unexpectedly surprised Americans, as the term “colored” is a relic of segregation in the US. In South Africa, the term “Coloured” remains an official racial classification, but it carries a distinct meaning.
