The Headies Awards Has Announced That The 18th Edition Will Be Held In Toronto

Nigeria’s Headies Awards has announced that its 18th edition will be held in Toronto, Canada, marking a significant change for the annual celebration of Nigerian music.

The announcement was made on June 15, 2026, during an event at the Eko Hotel in Lagos, where organizers shared plans for the ceremony in partnership with international entities, including representatives associated with the Academy Awards and the Canadian Embassy.

Ayo Animashaun, founder and CEO of Smooth Promotions and Hip TV, confirmed that the upcoming edition will take place in Toronto, calling the decision a strategic measure to enhance the global presence of the awards.

Animashaun noted that the decision was prompted by the substantial Nigerian population in Canada and the rising popularity of Afrobeats and Nigerian pop culture worldwide.

He also pointed out that the 2026 ceremony coincides with the awards’ 20th anniversary, originally launched in 2006 in Lagos as the Hip Hop World Awards before rebranding to The Headies.

Animashaun characterized the anniversary as an example of the awards platform’s “resilience, consistency, and commitment to celebrating excellence in Nigerian music,” despite various challenges faced over the years.

The Canadian Embassy expressed support for the initiative, with Deputy High Commissioner Carlos Rojas-Arbulu highlighting the partnership as indicative of the rapid growth of Nigerian music and its cultural impact.

He mentioned that the significant Nigerian community in Canada was a crucial factor in the decision, stating that hosting the event in Toronto would facilitate connections between Nigerian creatives and a wider international audience.

To assist with attendance and logistics for the event, organizers have partnered with travel company Wakanow. CEO Adebayo Adedeji announced that the collaboration would help attendees with travel plans, accommodations, airport transfers, and other experiences in Toronto.

With this development, the Headies Awards is continuing its transition from a local Nigerian event to a globally recognized platform, highlighting the increasing influence of Afrobeats and the international expansion of Nigerian music culture.
