SZA’s SOS has now occupied the top 10 position on the Billboard 200 chart for a total of 80 consecutive non-overlapping weeks. The singer of “Broken Clocks” achieved a record by having the longest-running album by a Black artist, surpassing the previous record held by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

SZA’s second studio album maintained its position at number No. on Sunday, March 16, as confirmed by a recent publication. The extension will last for an additional seven days. SOS has now reached an impressive 118 weeks on the Billboard 200, with the latest addition of 69,000 album-equivalent units.

‘SOS’ Continued Its Run In The Top 10 Thanks To Support From ‘Lana’ And Additional Tracks

SOS received a significant boost in late December 2024, nearly two years following its initial release, when LANA was marketed as a deluxe rather than a standalone project. Driven largely by on-demand streaming, the album rose from its position at No. 15 all the way back to the top of the chart. She added four new songs just before the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, including “Joni” featuring Don Toliver, “Take You Down,” “PSA,” and a solo rendition of “Open Arms.”

The shift in streaming has completely transformed the definition of a deluxe project; originally, a few bonus tracks were the norm, but now they’re essentially an entire album in disguise, packaged as an additional feature. The prolonged delay for LANA provided it with a significant and substantial boost. Other artists may employ unconventional – possibly even unapologetic – strategies in future releases if they take notes.

How Long Will SZA’s ‘SOS’ Remain In The Top 10?

The record for the longest Top 10 run in Billboard 200 history, held by 1956’s My Fair Lady at 173 weeks, means SZA has a considerable distance to cover. In the short term, reaching 100 weeks in the Top 10 appears to be a realistic goal – particularly given the likely advantage she will receive from performing at the “Grand National Tour” alongside Kendrick Lamar next month. The excursion is scheduled to commence on April 19 at Minneapolis in the United States. The final show will be held at Stockholm’s 3Arena on August 9, wrapping up the tour in the United States and Europe at Bank Stadium.

The Top Dawg Entertainment singer could also rely on fresh music videos from LANA to increase the album’s sales figures. Apart from a handful of promotional clips and a corresponding music video for “Drive,” SZA has contributed relatively little to the realm of cinematic narrative. These tracks include “Crybaby,” “Open Arms,” and “30” as notable examples. The 30-second clip, arguably the standout among the 15 new additions, is more than worthy of its own video segment, given the time she can spare from preparing for events on the road and collecting additional awards.
