Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has reignited the longstanding “Big 3” controversy in Afrobeats, arguing that the genre’s worldwide supremacy can no longer be attributed solely to three musicians.

The rapper confidently declared in a recent interview, which was recorded inside a car on Sunday, October 19, 2025, that Afrobeats has transformed into a “Big 7.”

He claims that the list now comprises Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide, Tems, Rema, and Asake, a combination of established artists and emerging talents who have influenced the sound and global appeal of African music.

Odumodublvck in the viral clip stated, “I’d like to make a case for the Big 3, I believe it’s actually the Big 7,” naming each artist with conviction.

For several years, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy have borne the title of “Big 3” as global pioneers of Afrobeats, with record-breaking albums, sold-out stadium tours, and international recognition. Odumodublvck’s expanded list also recognises the significant impact of Olamide, a street legend and mentor to numerous artists, as well as newer stars such as Tems, Rema, and Asake, whose international achievements have reconfigured the parameters of African music.

Tems’ chart-topping collaborations and Grammy win have made her one of Nigeria’s largest exports, with Rema’s Calm Down persistently breaking international streaming records. In contrast, Asake has topped both local and global charts with his Afrobeats sound, which is characterised by a Fuji influence.

Odumodublvck’s statement has sparked a lot of discussion online, with fans arguing over who should be included in the “Big 7.”

Odumodublvck’s statement highlights a broader reality, with Afrobeats having expanded far beyond its initial three pioneers, as numerous artists today continue to take its legacy to new geographical areas.
