Kendrick Lamar disclosed that the simplest song to compose from his album GNX was unexpectedly not the two-part track “tv off” or the reference-heavy “wacced out murals.” On Friday, February 7, the Compton artist was seen driving his 1987 Buick GNX alongside Timothée Chalamet, during which he revealed that “man at the garden” was the most effortless to articulate.

In a 3 ½-minute video released prior to the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, Lamar stated, “In my projects, there is always that one record … that I want everyone to hear, to convey the narrative or the message and tone I aim to express. I may have numerous other tracks with varying narratives and tones, such as reflection, for instance.”

He further elaborated, “To create a space for that one track I wish for everyone to hear is what drives me. That’s why I appreciate ‘man at the garden.’ The fact that it opens the record is significant.”

Among all the songs on GNX, “man at the garden” may be the least favored, as it does not contain the pointed critiques and subtle allusions that characterize much of the Pulitzer Prize winner’s 2024 output. Instead, Lamar took the opportunity to contemplate why he “deserves it all,” encompassing respect, accolades, increased wealth, and freedom.

“I genuinely mean that, bro. ‘man at the garden,’ I stand by every word in that track, man. It’s probably the simplest record to write,” he concluded. The complete video can be viewed below.

The days leading up to Sunday’s (February 9) Super Bowl LIX have marked a notable increase in Lamar’s public appearances, despite the year being only two months old. The DAMN. artist had much to share at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, where he secured five awards for “Not Like Us,” and on Thursday, February 6, he engaged in a conversation with Apple Music regarding his forthcoming performance.
