J. Cole Acknowledges That He Has No Plans To Retire From Rap

No dedicated fan genuinely believed that J. Cole would retire. Although he hinted that The Fall-Off might be his final album, he has a strong passion for rapping, making retirement unlikely. He acknowledged this during a February Reddit AMA, stating that while he wasn’t interested in producing “J. Cole” albums, he remained open to creating more music. In a recent interview with GQ, he firmly dismissed the idea of retirement.

Cole stated, “No, I’m not using that word at all.” He elaborated that while he initially intended The Fall-Off to be his last project, his perspective changed by the time he completed the album, leading him to conclude, “Oh, nah, I’ll never say I’m going to retire.” He also mentioned, “I don’t know whenever the next thing is going to happen, but I’m definitely not going to say no.”

Cole has a history of hinting at retirement, making it clear that he has no intention of following through. Fans understandably grew concerned, especially after the release of The Fall-Off in February, which suggested it could be his last album. He had teased the project back in 2018 with “1985 (Intro to ‘The Fall Off’)” featured on KOD.

In a 2020 open letter for The Players’ Tribune, Cole hinted at the possibility of stepping away from music. He described experiencing tough times, aiming to finish the 4 Your Eyez Only album before welcoming his first child, while striving to become the best rapper possible before eventually retiring.

Even after the album’s release, Cole did not completely address retirement. In a March appearance on Cam’ron’s “Talk With Flee,” he mentioned creating The Fall-Off to feel at peace if it turned out to be his final album, but he remained open to making another one if he felt inspired.
