Ice Spice’s ascension has been incredibly rapid. Her chart-topping hits have achieved widespread popularity, yet her lyrical skills tend to be overlooked in discussions about her abilities.

The “Bikini Bottom” rapper insists that her writing skills should be formally acknowledged. She discussed her decision not to engage with critics and fans questioning her writing ability in a Wednesday (Sept. 10) interview with NYLON magazine. “I think my mistake was primarily about giving people the sense that they were correct to some extent.” Others claimed I wasn’t a lyricist, so I went along with their assertion. That simply is not true. But it’s just not true.”

This Bronx native started her career with a series of hits that featured minimal lyrical content but emphasized strong rhythms and atmosphere. Between 2022 and 2023, she released songs – typically produced by RiotUSA – such as “Munch (Feelin’ U)”, “In Ha Mood”, and “Barbie World” featuring Nicki Minaj, among others. Each platinum-selling track also became a social media sensation.

It’s likely that she was too preoccupied to consider lyrical criticism, but now it seems she regrets her decision. She didn’t feel the need to provide proof. “I had already made up my mind that I was undoubtedly a lyricist.” Throughout the entire period. I simply allow them to express their opinions and be content with that.

In a 2023 interview, Ice Spice openly discussed her use of “simple” lyrics. She said she wouldn’t consider herself a lyricist at the time when speaking with Complex. It’s clear that lyrics are an integral part of music, and I do consider them when creating my songs, however I do include raps in my music but they are straightforward and uncomplicated. I want them to be easily understood; I don’t want them to be too complex, and they rarely resonate with people. I want people to hear it immediately and respond with something like, “That was cute.”

Ice Spice recently made her acting debut in the film Highest 2 Lowest, which was directed by Spike Lee and starred Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky.
