Nigerian singer and emerging Afropop artist Fave has explained her decision to officially release the viral AI-generated version of “Intentions,” a song originally by the duo Urban Chords.

The AI version circulated on social media earlier this year and closely mimicked Fave’s vocal style, leading many listeners to believe she had recorded it. Rather than disregarding the trend or requesting a removal, Fave opted to embrace it.

In discussing her choice, Fave mentioned that the viral clip helped her realize the strong connection fans felt with the sound they attributed to her. She noted, “People kept tagging me and saying the song felt like something I would sing. At first, I was shocked because it wasn’t me. But the more I listened, the more I understood why they loved it.”

She indicated that the enthusiastic response led her to rethink her views on AI-generated vocals, particularly when they lead to authentic fan engagement. “I saw how excited people were, and I didn’t want that excitement to die,” she remarked. “Instead of running from it, I decided to own it. If fans already believed in the song, why not make it real?”

Fave emphasized that her decision involved careful consideration. She collaborated with Urban Chords and her team before releasing an official version. “It was important to respect the original creators,” she stated. “Urban Chords did something beautiful, and I wanted my involvement to be a collaboration, not confusion.”

With the official release in progress, Fave aims to find a balance between creativity and technology while ensuring that artists are protected and respected. “AI is here whether we like it or not,” she noted. “But if it’s going to use my voice, then I want to guide the narrative and make sure the art still has heart.”

The official version of “Intentions” represents an important development in the relationship between African artists and AI music technology, which Fave hopes will lead to increased transparency, innovation, and collaboration in the industry.
