EP: Shwi noMtekhala – Kuthathe Konke

Shwi noMtekhala retains all the characteristics of Maskandi in their recent six-track collection titled “Kuthathe Konke.”

The digitalization of music has significantly benefited the Maskandi genre. Previously, Maskandi music was largely confined to Zulu communities and gatherings, and there was minimal promotion for upcoming album releases, even for established artists. The reliance on cassette distribution limited its reach.

However, with the rise of digital music and the accessibility of various streaming platforms, Maskandi music now has broader influence and audience reach. This evolution has empowered veteran artists to leverage these advancements, and one duo that has particularly succeeded in promoting Maskandi music across South Africa is Shwi noMtekhala. Their professional musical career began with their debut album, “Dustbin,” in 2003, and gained significant recognition with their 2005 album, “Wangisiza Baba.” They have consistently been a strong presence in the genre.

Over two decades in the music industry, they have consistently delivered quality work. Their albums have sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and they have received various prestigious awards, which further affirm their success. By adapting to contemporary trends while maintaining the authentic essence of Maskandi—characterized by guitar, storytelling, rhythmic grooves, and Zulu chants—they have produced the six-track EP “Kuthathe Konke.”

“Kuthathe Konke” is a thoughtfully composed EP, and aside from the tracks “Nhliziyo Yami Ayikhohlwa” featuring Shumi Lensizwa and “Ngabona Amathanga Amhlophe” featuring Maphungula IzinganeZoma, all other songs on the EP were entirely written and composed by the duo.
