Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has discussed the significant financial effort involved in making Rema’s song “Calm Down” one of the most prominent Afrobeats tracks globally.

In an interview on Toolz’s Bounce series, he revealed that the label invested between $4 million and $5 million to promote the song and achieve its current international success.

Don Jazzy highlighted the intense strategy and expenditure needed to enter major global markets. He noted that to attain worldwide recognition, continuous promotion, marketing, and expansion into new markets are essential. He stated, “A song like Calm Down, we probably spent close to $4–5 million to get it to where it is,” and mentioned that the team adopts a “conquer and move” strategy, where they reinvest to penetrate new regions after establishing a presence in one.

The investment has produced remarkable outcomes. Since its 2022 release, and following the remix with Selena Gomez, “Calm Down” has broken several global records. It became the first African song to exceed one billion streams on Spotify and ranks among the longest-charting African songs on the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying Rema’s status as a key figure in the Afrobeats genre.

Don Jazzy’s comments highlight the level of funding necessary to elevate African musicians on the global stage, emphasizing that achieving international success requires not only talent but also well-planned, high-budget campaigns that compete with major Western pop artists.
