Davido Indicates That Domestic Success Drives International Recognition

Afrobeats artist Davido has shared his perspective on why he focuses on establishing and maintaining his influence in Nigeria rather than seeking validation from Western audiences, emphasizing that his global reputation is based on the achievements he has made domestically.

In a recent Twitch livestream with streamer and comedian Carter Efe, the award-winning singer encouraged the content creator to keep investing in his Nigerian audience, highlighting that lasting international recognition generally begins with a strong presence in one’s local market.

“It’s very important to take over your home… The Western validation is good and sweet, but they are looking at your motion here. The motion I have in Yankee (overseas) is because they know in Nigeria, I am the King,” Davido stated.

He elaborated that the respect he receives internationally is closely linked to his status in Nigeria, arguing that international audiences and industry professionals often consider an artist’s influence in their home country before fully embracing them.

To support his point, Davido referenced Jamaican reggae artist YG Marley, who was taken aback by the extent of his popularity during a visit to Nigeria.

According to Davido, Marley experienced firsthand the level of recognition and support he has while they were filming the music video for their collaboration “Awuke.”

Davido’s remarks were made as he encouraged Carter Efe, who felt disappointed about missing Kai Cenat’s Streamers University in the United States. Efe had secured a place in the competitive program but was unable to attend due to visa issues.

The comedian has discussed the challenges he has encountered when trying to travel to the U.S., with recent immigration restrictions impacting applicants from several countries, including Nigeria. Davido took this opportunity to remind him that developing a strong presence in Nigeria could lead to even greater opportunities globally.

For Davido, the central message is that while global recognition has its value, true influence originates from gaining respect at home. He believes that international success is more meaningful and sustainable when it is grounded in local support and cultural relevance.
