Davido Discusses How His Father Established A Large Business

Afrobeats artist Davido has discussed the business empire established by his father, billionaire entrepreneur Adedeji Adeleke, noting that the family’s energy company is one of the largest private electricity producers in the country.

In a recently circulated video, the award-winning singer explained that his father’s company generates electricity for the national grid, indicating that this operation has contributed to the family’s enduring success.

“Every time you put on light, he gets a check,”

Davido remarked, detailing how the business earns revenue.

He clarified the company’s function in Nigeria’s power sector, stating that its obligation involves only electricity generation, after which the power is handed over to the government for distribution.

“We generate it and sell the power to the government because the government has the authority to distribute,” he explained. “It’s not on us. All we’re doing is generating and providing.”

The singer stated that the company currently accounts for approximately 18 percent of Nigeria’s electricity supply and has plans to significantly increase its capacity in the future, aiming to eventually meet up to 35 percent of West Africa’s electricity demands.

If this information is accurate, it would position the Adeleke family’s energy business among the leading private power producers in the region.

Davido also shared insights into his father’s business journey, revealing that Adedeji Adeleke became a millionaire at a young age.

“My dad made his first million when he was 23,”

he noted, indicating that this achievement serves as a source of motivation within the family.

The singer made these comments while reflecting on his family’s background and explaining his father’s decision to return to Nigeria after studying abroad. Adedeji Adeleke has diversified his business interests across various sectors, including energy, hospitality, and entertainment, and is the elder brother of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Davido also contrasted life in Nigeria with his experiences in the United States, where he possesses citizenship, highlighting differences in public services and healthcare.

“Compared to America, you can’t even compare the benefits. You go to the hospital, you have insurance, get taken care of. Back home, everything is cash and carry,”

he stated.
