Coco Jones, a singer and actress, has had a remarkable period over the past few years. Following her 2022 signing with Def Jam, she released her major-label debut EP, What I Didn’t Tell You, soon afterwards. Her debut EP earned her five Grammy nominations, with one being for Best New Artist. She ultimately took home the award for Best R&B Performance with her standout song “ICU.” This month, Jones made an official announcement that her debut album Why Not More? is scheduled to be released on April 25. The announcement was over a decade in the making, as she had been releasing music on her own since the age of 12. She shared the cover art and the new single from her album, named “Taste” via Instagram.
“Taste” shares a comparable structure with “Here We Go (Uh Oh),” the lead single from Why Not More. The track features a well-known sample, which is surrounded by a robust and effective production. The song “Here We Go” incorporates a sample of Lenny Williams’ song “‘Cause I Love You,” which is also featured on Twista’s track “Overnight Celebrity.” The track “Taste” samples Britney Spears’ well-known 2003 song “Toxic.” Beyond the provided sample, the produced track, which has been managed by Stargate and other producers, features a lush yet somewhat stripped-back sound, giving Coco Jones ample opportunity to demonstrate her vocal talents. The song’s lyrics revolve around Jones becoming entangled in a relationship she acknowledges should be avoided. The hook’s “Toxic” sample supports this notion. This sultry track is full of charm and serves as another exceptional addition to the single releases preceding Coco Jones’ highly anticipated debut full-length album. Listen to “Taste” below.
