Nigerian Afrobeats artist Ahmed Ololade, known by his stage name Asake, has discussed the adoption of his mother’s name as a key aspect of his musical persona.

The “Joha” hitmaker shared that during his time in school, members of his cultural group referred to him as “Omo Asake,” a nickname that ultimately influenced his professional name.

“People stopped adding the ‘Omo’ and just left ‘Asake.’ I thought it was cool and decided to go by it. It’s very important to me, and I’m not going to lose it. It’s what has brought me this far, and I continue to keep it that way,” he noted.

Asake emphasized the importance of the name within his family. His mother, whose name he took, is a devoted prayerful individual who was pleased when he began using her name in his performances.

The singer, recognized for his vibrant personality, also made light of the attention the name attracts, especially from female fans. He suggested that he relishes the admiration just as much as they appreciate the name, blending personal pride with his characteristic charm.

For Asake, the name represents more than a brand; it is a homage to his mother and a reflection of the journey that has propelled him to prominence in Nigeria’s music industry.
