Celebrity fast-food partnerships continue to be a popular trend, with Angel Reese making a historic achievement. Thursday, January 30, saw McDonald’s announce that the WNBA star has become the first female athlete to have her own meal.
Beginning February 10, fans will have the opportunity to access the Angel Reese Special for a limited time through the McDelivery app or by picking it up. The new menu item features the company’s BBQ Bacon Quarter Pounder, consisting of two slices of American cheese, slivered onions, and pickles. The burger, complete with a sesame seed bun, will be “smothered in smoky BBQ sauce and layered with crispy bacon,” characteristics that align with its name. Completing the meal are medium fries and a Hi-C to accompany it.
Reese has consistently had a significant presence of McDonald’s in their life, ranging from purchasing a McChicken Sandwich as a child to being designated a McDonald’s All-American in 2020, according to a press statement. Being the first female athlete to have my own meal as part of McDonald’s basketball tradition is a long-held dream come to life.
Angel Reese’s Special, she expressed the hope that it would motivate every young athlete to pursue their aspirations unwaveringly.
According to Jennifer “JJ” Healan, McDonald’s Vice President of Marketing, Brand, Content and Culture, a genuine link exists between the fast food giant McDonald’s and its enthusiastic basketball fan base. “Our goal is to sustain their enthusiasm for the game and provide assistance to athletes in both their on-court and off-court endeavours.”
McDonald’s recent celebrity collaboration followed its November 2024 partnership with Kai Cenat, who assisted in introducing the Chicken Big Mac. The fast-food chain has collaborated with a number of well-known brands, such as Cardi B, Saweetie, Kid Cudi, and Lil Yachty, among others.
In contrast, Reese has been securing numerous brand partnerships. In 2024, she released a Reebok clothing collection and collaborated with Reese’s Candy on three merchandise releases that leveraged their similar brand names.
