Spotify Launches New System to Identify AI Artist Personas

Spotify is initiating a new effort to enhance transparency regarding artificial intelligence in the music industry with a system aimed at identifying music profiles associated with AI-generated artist identities.

The streaming platform is launching an AI Persona label, enabling users to recognize profiles that represent artificial or virtual performers instead of real human artists.

It is important to note that the system is not intended to determine if an artist utilized artificial intelligence in creating a specific song. Musicians who incorporate AI in their production or creative processes will not automatically receive this designation. Rather, Spotify’s emphasis lies on the identity being presented to listeners.

The new indicator is set to be introduced from mid-September across various sections of Spotify’s mobile platform. Users may encounter it on artist profile pages, About sections, Search results, and alongside tracks in playlists.

Additionally, Spotify is revising how music from these profiles interacts with its recommendation system. Tracks linked to identified AI Personas will not appear in personalized recommendations by default, providing listeners with more control over the artists and music they choose to experience.

Starting from August 11, artists can indicate through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. However, the platform will not solely rely on voluntary disclosures.

Spotify intends to merge human evaluation with AI-driven investigative systems to identify profiles that may qualify for the new label. When the company assigns the label, the impacted artists will be informed and given the opportunity to accept the classification through disclosure or to dispute it through an appeal.

This initiative comes as AI-generated music, virtual performers, and digitally created artist identities are gaining prominence on streaming platforms. Their emergence has initiated broader discussions regarding authenticity, transparency, and the importance of understanding who is behind the music consumed by audiences.

By distinguishing the identity of an artist from the technology utilized in the creation of their music, Spotify aims to clarify the difference between AI-assisted creativity and entirely artificial performers.

As technology continues to transform the music industry and blur the lines between human and virtual artists, this new system provides listeners with an additional layer of information when exploring music on the platform.
