The Grammy Awards Have Announced New Categories And Eligibility Rules

The Recording Academy has announced significant updates in preparation for the 69th Grammy Awards, including the introduction of five new categories and revisions to voting procedures and eligibility requirements.

These changes, effective for the 2027 awards ceremony scheduled for February 7, aim to reflect the evolving global music landscape and acknowledge a wider array of artistic contributions.

Five New Grammy Categories Added
Among the key developments is the addition of five new award categories that encompass various genres and regions.

The new categories include:

– Best Asian Pop Music Performance – Recognizing outstanding performances in Asian pop genres, such as K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and songs featuring one or more Asian languages.
– Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance – Honoring exceptional collaborative performances within contemporary R&B music.
– Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance – Celebrating excellence in traditional pop recordings distinct from modern mainstream pop.
– Best Traditional Folk Album – Recognizing outstanding traditional folk projects, with the existing Best Folk Album category now renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.
– Best Latin Song – Awarded to songwriters of newly written Latin songs featuring at least 51 percent Spanish-language lyrics.

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., these additions aim to reflect the ongoing expansion and diversity of the international music industry.

Major Voting Reforms Introduced
In addition to the new categories, the Academy has implemented adjustments to its voting structure.

A new initiative called Ballot Plus will allow eligible voting members with expertise in multiple genres to vote in up to 15 peer-related categories, replacing the previous 10/3 voting model. This change is expected to provide broader representation across specialized music fields.

Best New Artist Eligibility Expanded
The Academy has also modified eligibility criteria for the Best New Artist category.

Artists can now be submitted up to four times before becoming ineligible, which increases the previous limit of three submissions.

Album Qualification Rules Updated
Another important revision pertains to album eligibility requirements.

Projects will now need to include 66 percent newly recorded material to qualify, down from the former 75 percent threshold. This change is expected to accommodate a broader range of creative projects and release formats.

Digital-Only Releases Gain Recognition
Reflecting modern consumption habits, internet-exclusive releases will now be eligible for consideration in the Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album categories, provided they include the necessary supporting materials with their commercial download.

Greater Recognition for Songwriters and Composers
The Academy has also expanded recognition for songwriters and composers. In the future, writers of new material on winning albums across most genre album categories will receive Grammy statuettes and achievement certificates, acknowledging their contributions alongside producers and engineers.

These changes indicate a progression in the Grammys’ ongoing evolution as the organization adapts to transformations in music creation, distribution, and global audience engagement. With new categories, wider eligibility standards, and increased recognition for creative contributors, the 2027 ceremony is poised to be one of the most inclusive editions of the awards.
