Ayra Starr Impresses Fans With Engaging Tiny Desk Performance

Nigerian music artist Ayra Starr has made her NPR Tiny Desk debut, delivering a five-song performance that highlighted her vocal capabilities and artistic development, as well as featuring a first live preview of new music from her upcoming album, Starrgirl.

The performance, shared on NPR Music’s YouTube channel as part of the 2026 Black Music Month series, represents a significant achievement for the singer, who has expressed her aspiration to perform on the renowned Tiny Desk stage since her teenage years.

For this intimate session, Ayra Starr chose a straightforward presentation, opting for a simple black sweatsuit rather than her usual fashionable attire. This minimalist approach allowed her vocal performance and musicianship to take precedence.

The set opened with popular tracks Rush and Commas, followed by Gimme Dat and Who’s Dat Girl. She presented fresh live arrangements that showcased the depth of her vocals and the range of her music.

A notable highlight of the performance was the introduction of Tornado, an unreleased song from her soon-to-be-released third studio album, Starrgirl. This track made its debut during the session, providing listeners with an early insight into the anticipated album’s musical direction.

Ayra Starr concluded the performance with Amin and Orun, two spiritually inspired songs that revealed a more introspective side of the artist. The final moments of the set demonstrated her ability to transition between vibrant pop songs and emotionally resonant narratives.

Starrgirl is set to be released on August 14, 2026, and will be Ayra Starr’s third studio album, following a series of successful singles, including Gimme Dat featuring Wizkid, Who’s Dat Girl with Rema, and Where Do We Go. With Tornado scheduled for release this Friday, the Tiny Desk performance served as both a celebration of her career journey and a preview of what fans can anticipate in her future work.

For an artist who dreamed of performing at NPR’s famous desk at the age of 14, this performance represented a significant milestone, further cementing Ayra Starr’s position in contemporary African music.
