Most Artists Are Broke, Just Famous – Akon Makes Shocking Claims

Senegalese-American music artist Akon has initiated discussions regarding the financial dynamics within the entertainment industry by expressing his thoughts on how money is allocated in the music business.

In an interview with Hip Hop Eye, Akon noted that artists, despite being the prominent figures in the industry, often receive the least financial benefit from their successful creations. He pointed out that while fame is commonly linked to wealth, in reality, substantial financial gains frequently go to those in other roles within the business.

Akon elaborated that executives and other behind-the-scenes professionals frequently earn more than the artists themselves, even when those artists attain significant global recognition and fame.

“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist. But if you want to make real money go to other sectors of the music business, like the producer, songwriter, manager, agent, and attorney. There are so many areas in the entertainment field that you can really maximize,” he stated.

He further emphasized the necessity of understanding the business aspects of entertainment, suggesting that careers in songwriting, management, production, legal representation, and talent management might offer better financial prospects than performing.

Akon’s comments have reignited discussions regarding artist compensation, music ownership, royalty systems, and the often-ignored professionals who contribute significantly to the industry’s success from behind the scenes.

While aspiring musicians often envision themselves in the spotlight, Akon’s remarks highlight that some of the most rewarding careers in entertainment may be found away from the stage and out of the public eye.
