Kendrick Lamar visited Centennial High School in Compton, California, on May 7, to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new construction project at the school. He was joined by musicians Dr. Dre and Will.i.am, both of whom are also involved in the school’s transformation.

Kendrick graduated from CHS in 2005, while Dr. Dre attended the school as a freshman in 1979 before transferring to Fremont High School due to academic issues.

The upcoming construction will mark the school’s first significant building project in 70 years, with the new facility expected to cost approximately $270 million. It is projected to open in 2029 and accommodate around 1,800 students, replacing the current school building.

During the ceremony, Dr. Dre described the event as a “full-circle moment,” referencing his time at the school. He humorously noted, “Well, sometimes I attended.” Dr. Dre expressed his commitment to “investing forward” rather than simply giving back, emphasizing his focus on impactful investments.

He also mentioned that the event symbolizes a promise he made to the city that shaped him, stating that the groundbreaking represents a long-shared vision coming to fruition.

While Kendrick did not speak during the ceremony, his positive demeanor indicated his support for the new school project.
