Lizzo Has Reached A Settlement In A Lawsuit Concerning A Snippet That References Sydney Sweeney’s Advertisement For “Great Jeans”

Lizzo has opted to settle the copyright lawsuit related to her unreleased song “I’m Goin’ Til October,” which humorously references Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle advertisement.

On January 12, Rolling Stone reported that GRC Trust and the Grammy Award-winning artist have reached a “settlement in principle.” The lawsuit, filed in October 2025, alleged that she used “both instrumental and vocal elements” from a song titled “Win or Lose (We Tried),” presumably by soul singer Sam Dees.

In a now-deleted video, she rapped, “No kizzy, he ain’t got no business being with me / Fat a**, pretty face with the titties / B**ch, I got good genes, like I’m Sydney,” while hosing down a red Porsche.

The Georgia-based company sought “damages and an injunction blocking the exploitation of its song.” Although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, GRC Trust’s lawyers stated they intend to “file a dismissal of the case with prejudice” within the next 60 days.

This case was notable, particularly because Lizzo never released or indicated plans to release the song on streaming platforms. However, as pointed out by Rap-Up in its initial coverage of the lawsuit, snippets are not automatically exempt from copyright law.

At the time, representatives for the “Rumors” artist expressed surprise at the lawsuit, clarifying, “To be clear, the song has never been commercially released or monetized, and no decision has been made at this time regarding any future commercial release of the song.”

Recently, Lizzo announced her upcoming Houston Rodeo debut on March 6 for Black Heritage Day. In an Instagram post, she remarked, “Last time we tried this, it was March 2020, and I think y’all know what happened then. But that’s the funny thing about second chances: a b**ch gonna always bounce back.”

On the music front, she continues to enjoy the success of MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING, which had its deluxe edition released last September. The LP features “YITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)” along with collaborations with SZA and Doja Cat.
