Nigerian singer and powerful vocalist Waje has revealed that she was never paid for her contribution to P-Square’s 2007 hit single, Do Me, which helped bring her voice to a national audience.

On The Honest Bunch Podcast, Aituaje Iruobe, known professionally as Waje, discussed her early difficulties in the Nigerian music industry and the knowledge she gained from her experiences.

She remembered the experience with a mix of humour and sincerity, saying she hadn’t earned a single penny from P-Square’s ‘Do Me’. The song opened opportunities for me, but it also taught me a great deal about the commercial aspects of the music industry.

Featured on P-Square’s Game Over album, Do Me emerged as one of the standout tracks of the late 2000s and still enjoys widespread fan support. Waje’s powerful vocals played a significant role in the track’s success, yet she claimed that many people were unaware that it was her voice featured on the recording.

“Picture yourself in Onitsha market and trying to convince the crowd that every time ‘Do Me’ is played, that’s my voice,” she said with a laugh. People would stare at me, wondering, ‘Who are you?’ I wasn’t believed.

Waje also stated that she was not included in the music video, citing the fact that she lacked a passport when the video was being filmed. She explained that it limited the public recognition she might have received for the song’s success.

The experience from P-Square’s “Do Me” initially made Waje feel underappreciated, but it ultimately motivated her to take charge of her career, define her own identity, and assert her talent’s worth.

Currently regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential and esteemed vocalists, Waje reflects on that experience as both a painful and pivotal stage in her career. “She explained that it showed her the significance of a structured approach, formal agreements, and pricing.” Your most valuable lesson may often arrive disguised as your most significant setback.
