Young Thug’s UY Scuti album was released on Friday, 26 September, marking his first full-length release following his release from prison last year. The 20-track album is characterised by incorporating courtroom audio, leaked jail calls, and sharp insults throughout. The LP features a heavyweight lineup with Cardi B, Lil Baby, Future, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, and YFN Lucci, the latter being an artist Thugger has had a tumultuous partnership with for some time.

What sparked online conversation among listeners wasn’t just the collaborations, but two particular aspects: the album cover and the opening song, “Ninja.”

The cover features a close-up of Thug with his hands covering his ears, but it’s his noticeably pale complexion that grabs the most attention. Viewers quickly expressed perplexity, with one stating, “It’s already too much going on in America, and now, Young Thug is light-skinned.” Envision being in a worst album covers competition and your competitors are Young Thug and Gucci Mane. Someone else chimed in, saying “Thug is out here living his Vybz Kartel 2009 fantasies with that album cover.” Jokes about the image were shared by peers such as Jacquees, Stunna 4 Vegas, and Ty Dolla $ign in the YSL frontman’s Instagram comments.

The music came under close scrutiny. The song “Ninja” starts with an audio clip of a prosecutor from Thug’s RICO trial, which it then transitions into verses characterised by bold and confident language. They were the closing lines that went viral. Thugger rapped: “I’m not fake, you negro, black diamonds today, I’m a negro, I’m calling my opponents ‘negro.'” The repeated use of the hard “-er” left fans questioning whether it was a deliberate choice or an unusual pronunciation.

Both controversies were quickly linked. One user exclaimed, “What is Young Thug doing, man.” Is this some sort of humiliation ceremony? He’s using exaggerated RP pronunciations on his album intro and has a strange cover. Someone else phrased it more directly: “Young Thug, for instance, bleached his skin white for the album cover and pronounced the hard ‘ER’ sound around 15 times in the intro.”

Take a look at some other reactions that have been left.
