Tyla becomes the second artist to take home an MTV VMA award for Best Afrobeats.

Tyla Laura Seethal, a South African breakout star, is solidifying her global supremacy after winning the Best Afrobeats award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.

A 23-year-old native of Johannesburg achieved victory over a challenging lineup that featured prominent Nigerian artists such as Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid, and Tems.

At the UBS Arena in New York, the star-studded event occurred on Sunday, with Tyla drawing attention on the red carpet by wearing a 1993 vintage Chanel ensemble from the Spring/Summer collection, which consisted of an ultra-short beige minidress, a cropped top, black shorts, and gold medallions.

She burst with enthusiasm, saying: “I am genuinely thrilled; this is absolutely incredible.” Credit goes to the nominees, and to Africa and my team for their resilience in that challenging category. It’s truly a blessing to be here, receiving yet another award, one that holds a great deal of significance.

This marks Tyla’s second consecutive win in the category, following her 2024 victory with Water, the global hit that initially propelled her into the history books.

She also stated that she had a very specific idea for her fashion moment: “With this outfit, I said, ‘put me in Chanel,’” she laughed.

The rising superstar received nominations in two categories for her track Push 2 Start: Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography.

She gave fans a hint about an upcoming project, saying it is on the way and will be released soon, adding “just keep an eye out, but for now, keep an eye out for Chanel coming soon.”

This latest win contributes to her increasing number of accolades, which already comprise a Grammy for Best African Music Performance in 2024 and a hosting stint at the Kids’ Choice Awards.
