Travis Scott, Playboi Carti & Future – WHERE WAS YOU

The Cactus Jack Records family is being spearheaded into the 2020s by the JACKBOYS with their new compilation album, led by Travis Scott, titled JACKBOYS 2. The collective also includes other notable figures such as close collaborators Playboi Carti and Future on “WHERE WAS YOU.”

The presence of King Vamp might make the production sound somewhat unexpected if you’re aware of it. His voice isn’t usually audible above these tense guitar plucks, but La Flame delivers his verse quite well over them. Pluto’s vocal mix is slightly off, but he still conveys the expected sleepy yet wavy energy. A straightforward yet impactful trap beat guides us through more powerful bass kicks and extra piano ornaments, adding at least a little dynamism to the track.

Overall, it’s what you’ve come to expect from the rap chemistry of Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, and Future. Lyrically, “WHERE WAS YOU” is somewhat about loyalty and about everything the trio came from in the past. It’s smooth enough to stand out in a few instances, but cohesive enough to maintain the trance state.

This joins other major moments on this new project, including a Travis Scott diss on JACKBOYS 2’s opening track. He responded to some recent shots from Pusha T on the new Clipse album, which also includes the highly anticipated track Let God Sort Em Out. We will see how fans respond to the project, amidst other allegedly questionable JACKBOYS 2 narratives.
