Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi created a poignant moment at her daughter Ayomiku Mary Alabi’s wedding celebration by performing Running (To You), a 2020 hit single by Chike, which features Simi, in a special tribute to her husband, Soji Alabi.

The wedding ceremony was a small, informal gathering of the bride’s closest family and acquaintances. Tope Alabi’s choice to perform the romantic ballad, which includes lines such as “I’ll be running to you, running to you, no looking back,” added a dual significance to the festivities, honouring not only Ayomiku’s new beginnings but also Tope and Soji’s long-lasting love.

Their relationship began in 1994, when Soji worked as a sound engineer on Tope’s Yoruba film projects, ultimately resulting in their marriage in 1998. More than twenty years on, Soji continues to play a vital role in her life, overseeing her professional pursuits and coordinating her annual Praise the Almighty concert.

The performance served as a heartfelt tribute to Soji’s unshakeable backing, with Tope Alabi delivering the lyrics: “I’ll be a soldier for you… you should know I’ve got you.” The moment had a profound impact on those present, lending an emotional dimension to the already celebratory atmosphere.

Last month, Tope Alabi paid a public tribute to her husband, presenting him with the “Husband of the Year” award at her 15th annual worship conference in Lagos. A surprise performance by Tope Alabi at her daughter’s wedding served to strengthen the close relationship between them, making the occasion especially memorable for Tope Alabi, her loved ones, and her fans.
