Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has opened up about a tough period in her dating life, sharing that she once went through a “disrespectful” and draining relationship with another famous person.

In a recent chat, Tiwa talked about how her ex wanted their relationship kept under wraps. He thought that if they went public, it would attract unwanted attention and mess up his ability to network at events.

“He said he didn’t want us to be open about our relationship. He mentioned, ‘When we’re at events, I may talk to other people, but I’m just doing that so people don’t think anything is going on,’” Tiwa shared.

The singer acknowledged that she tried to understand his point of view at first, but it hurt her a lot. She explained that when they went to events, she had to watch him flirt and chat with other women, all while he silently assured her everything was fine.

“I felt like I couldn’t speak up. It was right there in front of me,” Tiwa said, thinking back on how the situation made her feel silenced and disrespected. Tiwa Savage pointed out that this kind of trouble led to the end of their relationship.

Putting her personal troubles aside, Tiwa is now celebrating a big achievement in her career with the launch of her new album This One Is Personal, which was released on August 29. This 13-song album is her first since 2020 and has been called the most personal work she’s done, exploring themes of hurt, healing, and personal growth.

Tiwa Savage has also been in the news for turning down the title of “Queen of Afrobeats,” saying that many other female artists also deserve recognition for their work.
