Nigerian Afrobeats artist Tiwa Savage has discussed her approach to single parenting, explaining her decision to raise her son, Jamil Balogun, away from excessive privilege despite her success and wealth.

On her official Instagram page, Savage referenced advice from business leader Ibukun Awosika, who warns against overindulging children. She noted that shielding children from struggles can diminish their ambition and motivation to pursue meaningful goals in the future.

Tiwa wants her 10-year-old son to grasp the importance of effort, discipline, and gratitude, rather than having constant access to luxury. She exposes him to everyday experiences that foster humility and resilience.

For instance, she mentioned opting for commercial flights and seating Jamil in economy class when private travel is not necessary.

She recalled a moment when her son expressed unhappiness during a commercial flight due to discomfort. Despite his feelings, Savage believes these experiences are essential for him to appreciate life beyond comfort and privilege, helping to shape his character.

In addition to travel, she has a reward-based system at home, requiring Jamil to earn certain privileges, such as buying online games, by completing chores or achieving good academic results.

Furthermore, she restricts his access to gadgets, snacks, and sweets during the week, emphasizing structure and routine.

Faith also plays a significant role in her parenting. Tiwa ensures Jamil participates in Bible study every night before bed, aiming to provide him with a spiritual and moral foundation from an early age.

Savage highlighted that her method is rooted in love and intention, not strictness. She described Jamil as well-behaved and mentioned her goal of laying a strong foundation to guide him as he grows.

By sharing her parenting philosophy, Tiwa has initiated conversations about raising children in affluent households and finding a balance between providing comfort and encouraging ambition. For her, success in parenting is measured by how well a child is prepared for life beyond privilege.
