The Weeknd – Closing Night

The Weeknd Closing Night

The Weeknd embarked on a tour that began in July 2022 and has been running for three years. The After Hours Til Dawn Tour was initially planned as the After Hours Tour, scheduled for 2020. The year 2020 brought both a pandemic and the peak of The Weeknd’s professional success. This expansion resulted from the latter cause. A planned arena run of a few months in 2020 unexpectedly evolved into a groundbreaking stadium tour, encompassing a total of 110 shows.

The Weeknd concluded his tour on September 3 with a performance at the Alamodome in San Antonio. To conclude a run that has exceeded the expectations of many, he released “Closing Night” on YouTube.

The track was initially released on physical versions of Hurry Up Tomorrow earlier this year. It was exclusive to the Japanese version and the edition with a Pharrell-designed cover. Those versions were exclusively available for purchase through The Weeknd’s online store, rather than on streaming platforms.

The track, produced by Swedish House Mafia, functions as the closing song in the various album editions where it is featured. The original closing track functions slightly better. Despite everything, the song remains great and is one of the better tracks from this album cycle.

Lyrically, “Opening Night” is its closest parallel within the album. In terms of composition, it diverges significantly, evolving into a synth-dominant ballad that explores the theme of unhealthy patterns in a toxic partnership. He pointed out to his partner that she was overly immersed in her phone and not paying attention to their real-life relationship.

If “Closing Night” is to be the final release from Abel Tesfaye as The Weeknd, it won’t be a poor way for him to conclude his discography.
