Seun Kuti Criticizes Comparisons Between His Father Fela And Wizkid

Grammy-nominated Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has criticized the comparisons between Afrobeats artist Wizkid and his late father, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, stating that such comparisons undermine Fela’s legacy.

In a recent Instagram livestream, Seun addressed fans of Wizkid, known as Wizkid FC, and expressed his disapproval of labeling Wizkid as the “new Fela.”

Seun emphasized that equating contemporary artists with his father diminishes Fela’s historical, cultural, and political contributions to music and society.

He remarked:

“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your conversations. Claiming that your artist is the new Fela is misguided. When you realized that no one could fill those shoes, and individuals like me challenged those claims, your defensiveness emerged. It is disrespectful to compare Wizkid to Fela.”

Seun also pointed out the lack of respect and understanding of Fela’s legacy among some fans, attributing their attitudes to ignorance rather than meaningful resistance:

“You have no respect. I appreciate defiance, but this is ignorance.”

He further commented on how toxic fan culture has adversely impacted the music industry, indicating that rivalries among fan bases have obstructed collaborations between artists:

“Wizkid fans are online disrespecting Fela again. Why do you always bring Fela into your discussions? The overzealousness of certain fans has negatively influenced the industry. Some artists can no longer collaborate due to fan rivalries.”

Seun Kuti described Wizkid FC as ‘the most ignorant fanbase in the world,’ encouraging them to enjoy their favorite artist’s music without making constant comparisons:

“Can’t you enjoy your artist without bringing someone else into it? The reason you can’t is that the music doesn’t fulfill your spirit. You can pretend to enjoy it, but deep down, you are not satisfied.”

His comments reflect concerns about fan behavior and disrespect in current music discussions, while reaffirming the cultural and musical significance of Fela Kuti.
