Aside from SZA, one of the most thrilling special guests at Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime performance was Serena Williams, who performed the Crip Walk to “Not Like Us” on February 9th. However, an unexpected consequence was that it would serve as a final, ironic moment after the dance move was performed in a provocative manner following the victory over Maria Sharapova at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Grand Slam champion expressed heartfelt gratitude to the GNX rapper, posting a video on Tuesday (Feb. 11) that included behind-the-scenes footage, just days after performing in front of more than 100 million viewers. Kendrick Lamar and his team had been trying to accomplish something for a very long time. What’s the point of this? She explained that they had thoroughly enjoyed your Crip Walk performance at the Olympics following your victory in the gold medal event.

“I’m thinking, what’s the significance of the Super Bowl?” Is this a genuine inquiry? It’s unlikely I’d ever get the chance to dance at a Super Bowl. The mother of two exclaimed, “Let’s do it!” “The success of my winning dance routine after the Olympics was bound to be financially rewarding at some point.” “I knew my winning dance after the Olympics would pay off one day.”

Her 2012 celebration sparked significant outrage, prompting numerous critics to call for a fine or even the revocation of her gold medal. Much of the backlash was not just a reaction to the dance, but to the people performing it. As a Black female tennis player, she has consistently faced intense criticism and scrutiny for her mannerisms and attire in a sport traditionally dominated by white athletes. For those who were aware, the reference held significance due to her ties to Los Angeles, particularly Compton.

On Tuesday morning, the clip shared showed Williams guiding viewers through the entire sequence of events leading up to her significant moment, including getting ready, watching the Kansas City Chiefs play the Eagles, and Lamar’s performance. At one point during his performance, she amusingly whispered to the camera, “It’s an inopportune moment to need to urinate.”

Following this, she marked the occasion with the enthusiasm one would show for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The top 10 seconds of my life were truly unforgettable, and I was performing exceptionally well at that moment. Williams stated that she had been concentrated on the task at hand. She quipped, “I’m not letting go of my 15 seconds of fame – I need to be famous for something,” in a humorous remark that belied her status as the most decorated tennis player in history.

It was hardly unexpected to see Williams step onto the Super Bowl LIX field, considering her appearance in the 2024 series “Not Like Us.” Lamar dropped a line saying “From Alondra down to Central, no one better speak on Serena,” apparently alluding to the WYN BEAUTY founder’s alleged relationship with Drake.

It’s worth mentioning that Sunday’s big game wasn’t actually Williams’ first public dance to the Mustard-produced song. She brought up the song during the 2024 ESPY Awards, where she served as the host. The next time Drake attends a Raptors game in a courtside seat, they’re going to run into him unexpectedly. The Olympic gold medalist quipped, “All the seats are taken.”
