New York-based rapper Scarlip is poised to make her official debut. With Scarred B4 Fame on the horizon, she treats fans to an impactful “Runaway Love Freestyle” in the meantime. She’s releasing her first song of the year 2025.
Preparing to ignite passion, Scarlip has won over her followers with her unapologetic personality. “Runaway Love” reworks the Polow Da Don–produced beat from Ludacris’s song of the same name, incorporating Mary J. Blige’s original vocals. ScarLip employs the well-known instrumental to heighten her voice and revisit themes of trauma, survival, and escape.
“The original song had a distinct impact,” says Scarlip. “It seemed as though Mary was speaking directly to me, having a clear understanding of the difficulties I was facing.”
ScarLip shares her own stories, following a similar pattern to Luda and Mary from the Bronx. According to her, Blige’s voice initially resonated deeply with her personal pain, and now she’s reciprocating that emotional connection – albeit from a different perspective, having navigated the challenges she once faced. The rap artist is also capable of conveying a more gentle aspect through the song.
The release of the new track comes on the heels of a significant 2024 for Scarlip, which saw the inclusion of soundtracks. Life can be utterly unpredictable, to say the least. This is a significant film. ScarLip says “Bad Boys,” like that.
ScarLip is marking a new phase with the release of her debut project, Scarred B4 Fame, scheduled for June 20. “Runaway Love Freestyle” transcends music, embodying her personal creed. She’s no longer feeling the need to flee. She’s making steady progress.
Her debut album has been a long time in the making and is her most significant release to date in her music career. It appears that Scarlip has a sense of being left behind by New York. It’s a good feeling to be included among the rappers that positively represent my hometown. This is what the city has to offer, and I’m choosing to keep that sound. The quintessential New York vibe.
