Rema, a multiple award-winning singer and performer, has clarified and set the record straight regarding a misinterpreted statement he made about Nigerian artists.
Rema, a prominent Afrobeats artist, recently corrected Album Talks’ misinterpretation of his comments regarding Nigerian artists showcasing their heritage. Album Talks referenced Rema’s interview with Dazed in a tweet, stating that he apparently believed many Afrobeats artists were not adequately representing their cultural heritage.
Rema clarified that his initial comment was narrowly focused on the fact that he is one of the few prominent artists from Benin City, Nigeria, rather than making a broader criticism of the industry. He referenced the tweet, which stated, “In context of being one of the very few mainstream Artists from Benin. Stop the 🧢”.
In an initial conversation, Rema demonstrated his strong dedication to highlighting his cultural background. He stressed that, in contrast to other cultures, relatively few artists from his area have achieved mainstream success, which makes it crucial for him to continue representing his community.
He stated in the interview:
“Unlike other…cultures, there aren’t many of us repping where we’re from, you know what I mean? So I feel like I have to bring it every time with me. Still I can’t stop to…”
