Hip Hop is gaining recognition in academic circles, including at Ivy League institutions. On January 26, Princeton University announced the introduction of a women’s Hip Hop course for the Spring 2026 semester.

The course, titled “Miss-Education: The Women of Hip Hop,” is characterized as a multimedia course, lab, and performance workshop focused on the history of women in Hip Hop, presenting them as foundational rather than secondary figures.

The course will include a diverse array of prominent female rappers for study, such as MC Sha Rock, Roxanne Shanté, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Bahamadia, Lil Kim, and Cardi B, reflecting various eras and styles within the genre.

The course will be taught by a strong team of educators. Chesney Snow, who is a Hip Hop educator and a Princeton faculty member, will be joined by Eternia, a respected Canadian Hip Hop artist, and Dr. Francesca D’Amico-Cuthbert, a historian specializing in Hip Hop and a multi-disciplinary artist and researcher.

This initiative was developed in collaboration with Princeton’s Lewis Center for the Arts, which focuses on promoting the arts at the university. The Hip Hop Education Center is also involved, expressing enthusiasm for the launch of this course in a social media announcement.

Students in the course will engage as both critical investigators and creative practitioners, according to the official description. Emulating elements from the Lyricist Lounge Show’s theatrical hybrid, students will create skits that delve into Hip Hop feminism. Their semester-long effort will culminate in an original creative and scholarly project to be presented at the Lewis Center for the Arts on April 30.

Classes will be held on Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. The course is available to students from all disciplines and has no prerequisites, but securing one of the limited spots may prove challenging.
