Afrobeats artist Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, who is also known by his stage name Spyro, has discussed the emotional difficulties he experienced before achieving fame, explaining how his father’s harsh criticism, which included calling him a failure, led him to question his self-worth.

During a heartfelt conversation with TV host Frank Edoho, the singer of “Who Is Your Guy” revealed that in his childhood, he frequently struggled with low self-esteem due to his father’s ongoing criticism. Over time, Spyro started to accept that his father frequently labelled him a failure, which memories he recalled.

Spyro confessed that his dad constantly told him he was a failure, which he eventually accepted as truth, and these words had a lasting impact on his self-perception and outlook on his future.

It wasn’t until the singer developed a closer connection with God that things started to alter significantly for him. With faith and prayer, Spyro began to see himself in a new light and acquired the resilience to persevere through difficult periods.

“He said that God altered his way of thinking.” My success in my career was due to both prayer and my own self-confidence which helped me to overcome my fears and led to new opportunities.

Prior to his 2022 breakthrough, Spyro came close to abandoning music entirely and attempted to make a living through interior design. His single “Who Is Your Guy” became a huge success throughout Africa, resonating with people through its themes of friendship and loyalty.

The 2023 remix featuring Tiwa Savage further boosted his career, winning the Best Collaboration award at the 16th Headies Awards and demonstrating, as Spyro noted, that faith and perseverance are ultimately rewarded.
