Ghanaian artist MOLIY has been named the Spotify EQUAL Africa Artist of the Month for January 2026. She is also featured on the cover of the EQUAL Global playlist, symbolizing the representation of African women in the growing creative landscape and global music scene.

MOLIY is recognized for her distinctive combination of Afro-pop, Afro-fusion, and dancehall, creating a sound that is playful yet intentional, and soft yet powerful. Her music connects emotion with movement, resulting in a rapidly expanding international audience.

Having been born and raised in Ghana, MOLIY’s musical journey began as a curiosity that transformed into a calling. She was influenced by the sounds of renowned Ghanaian artists such as Daddy Lumba, Rex Omar, R2Bees, and 4×4, as well as prominent female performers like Ebony, Eazzy, Itz Tiffany, and Sister Deborah. These artists instilled in her values of confidence, freedom, and individuality.

In December 2024, MOLIY released her breakout single, “Shake It To The Max (FLY),” which marked a pivotal moment in her career. The track gained significant popularity, becoming an international anthem and establishing her as part of a new generation of African women with global aspirations. Her rise was evident in Spotify Wrapped 2025, where she was recognized as the most-exported Ghanaian artist.

MOLIY’s influence extends beyond her music; she also represents a shift in the perception of African women. Her visuals, performances, and personal brand emphasize femininity, individuality, and freedom, inspiring younger women to confidently claim their space.

Spotify’s EQUAL Africa initiative aims to elevate women’s voices, with MOLIY’s recognition highlighting the vital role African women play in shaping global music and culture.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, stated, “MOLIY sits comfortably at the intersection of African pop and global culture. Her music reflects a generation that’s fluid, expressive, and unbound by borders, making her a powerful voice within EQUAL Africa.”

In a conversation with MOLIY, she shared insights about her music, purpose, and sense of peace. When asked about a surprising aspect of her personality, she revealed that she is quite introverted and values quiet moments at home with family and friends, enjoying activities such as watching movies and playing online games.

MOLIY recognized her musical calling in 2018 while searching for purpose. She was inspired by the global rise of African music and felt she had a unique contribution to make.

Describing her sound to first-time listeners, she characterizes it as rooted in Afro-pop and Afro-fusion, with elements of dancehall. She aims to create bold and playful music that is both emotional and danceable.

For those hesitant to pursue their dreams, she advises focusing on consistent actions within one’s control, citing her own experience of starting with online freestyling and the importance of positive reinforcement and affirmations.

Navigating the industry as a woman, MOLIY emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself amidst external pressures, embracing a fluid perspective on her artistry defined by confidence and vulnerability.

Being a part of EQUAL signifies the importance of trusting her voice in a crowded industry and underscores the power of women supporting each other, representing visibility, support, and opportunity. She expresses gratitude for being included in this initiative.
