Nigerian Afrobeats artist Mavo is gaining attention with his recent appearance on Apple Music’s Africa Now. He spoke with host Nandi Madida through FaceTime about his rapidly advancing career and growing influence in the music industry.

During the discussion, the 22-year-old artist shared insights on managing early success, establishing a unique artistic identity, and positioning himself within Africa’s new generation of Afrobeats talent. Mavo also mentioned collaborating with prominent figures such as Wizkid, Davido, and CKay, acknowledging that his rise has been rooted in gratitude, faith, and a strong dedication to his work.

“It’s crazy. I’m overwhelmed, but at the same time I know it’s what I have to do,” Mavo mentioned. “I like the drive. I like what I get from what I put in, so I just keep putting it in.”

He elaborated on the meaning behind his project Kilometer, explaining that the title reflects the speed and urgency of his journey in the industry. “Everything was moving so fast,” he noted. “So we just said, okay, let’s name it ‘Kilometer’. How many meters can you run? How fast can you run?”

A notable part of the interview was when Mavo shared about his original slang and personal “dictionary,” which exemplifies his dedication to creativity. He disclosed that he has compiled a significant collection of invented words, which he refers to as his “busy lingua,” distinguishing himself in a competitive music landscape.

“I always don’t want to do what everybody’s doing,” he stated. “I had to create my own words. I literally have a dictionary of my own words, and I feel like that’s crazy.”

When discussing his collaborations with established Afrobeats artists, Mavo remained modest, attributing his opportunities to faith. “God just said take all of these features. Bless the song. Do what you can do for it,” he expressed.

The artist also provided a glimpse into his unreleased music, indicating that many of his best tracks are still awaiting the right moment for release. With multiple projects planned for the upcoming months, Mavo promised ongoing activity and progression, describing the upcoming releases as “back to back.”
