Leon Thomas is preparing for his “Mutts Don’t Heel Tour” but first releasing a completely new project. The singer-songwriter confirmed to Billboard on Thursday, September 4, that he has an EP scheduled for October.

The seven-track release is characterised as significantly funkier than his earlier work and at times more psychedelic. Thomas declined to mention the title, but did admit it was partly influenced by his encounter with George Clinton at the Coachella festival in April.

You’re the kid with the dog from the song [‘MUTT’], correct? I’m fond of that establishment. Clinton reportedly told him, “I made you this hat,” according to Billboard. “Before I take the stage and perform ‘Atomic Dog,’ I’m going to award you the crown.” Thomas also observed that he is at the final stage of wrapping up his work as a songwriter and producer for other artists, with only a limited number of projects remaining. Also included are Justin Bieber and apparently BeyoncΓ©.

The new EP will technically be Thomas’ first project outside of MUTT and his third release to appear on streaming platforms in 2025. In May, he released the expanded edition of HEEL, which comprised nine additional songs from the original album, featuring tracks like “PARTY FAVORS” with Big Sean and “RATHER BE ALONE” assisted by Halle.

In August, he subsequently made his NPR “Tiny Desk Concert” set available for streaming. The performance consisted of three tracks from his sophomore release and two from his debut album, Electric Dusk. The “Mutts Don’t Heel Tour” doesn’t end until April 2026, so it may take a bit longer for the singer to fully transition into his next era. Despite this, he appears not to mind.

Thomas told Billboard that he doesn’t really mind being in a position where we push MUTT for such a long time because it deserves to be heard globally. I’m thrilled to be among the pioneers who revive those classic emotions without borrowing their compositions.
