Even during a self-imposed “hiatus,” Kid Cudi remains active. The Cleveland-based rapper has recently utilised social media to participate in the “Maui Wowie” viral trend, which was inspired by a song nearly 20 years old.

The chorus to “Maui Wowie” by Cudder is “Goin’ back to Honolulu just to get that/That Maui Wowie, that Maui Wowie,” and it appeared on his 2008 mixtape “A Kid Named Cudi.” The meme allegedly originated with a TikTok user known as @aaronxbrownn. In September 2025 he posted a video of himself clinging to a street sign while singing the “Maui Wowie” refrain, and a new trend emerged.

Thousands of videos have since emerged of individuals participating in the challenge, often unknowingly accompanied by Cudi’s music. The classic track gained momentum on streaming platforms and is currently featured on Spotify’s daily Viral 50 chart.

The “Day ‘n’ Nite” rapper has also participated in the challenge, posting a video of himself smiling. “Cudi expressed gratitude to everyone for sharing his song, having a good time, and displaying affection!!!” Timeless at 17 years old.

Cudi revealed in an August 2025 interview with People that at one point he was smoking 15 blunts daily. He has significantly reduced his consumption of it after taking a break of several months. “Now I just make the most of my free time at night or on the weekends when I’m relaxing, but I’m not smoking nearly as much weed as I used to – a joint can last me for almost an entire day.” My relationship has undergone a significant change as a result of that. I’m more invested in being sober for a lot more of the time and being more present.

Cudi has recently released his latest album, Free, which was his final one on a major label, in August. He subsequently announced that he would be stepping back from releasing new music. Immediately after that, he released a fresh independent song, “Once”, which he referred to as his “goodbye for the present.”

Given that he’s been involved in social media memes and has just performed at an Adam Sandler show in Cleveland, he isn’t too far away.
